So I’m reading about the protests that went on at UVSC yesterday as Michael Moore visited and spoke.
People protesting Moore Speaking.
People protesting against the anti-Moore protesters.
People protesting against the War
Against Bush
For peace
To support the troops
People protesting your mom.
I personally have no problem with Moore speaking at UVSC. Sure, I have my opinions about the guy and I don’t trust him even as far as I can throw him (which lets face it, I couldn’t throw him if I tried– he was making manipulative and misleading documentaries long before Bush was in office), I do have a problem with the school blowing $50,000 on it. That money could be so much better spent.
Alas, if I heard correctly it has something to do with the student body officers begging Moore to come. Those who know me know how highly I think of UVSC students, heh. It’s over and done with, $50,000 down the tubes to listen to an entertainer. An ENTERTAINER. Let’s not forget that to counter liberal Moore they brought speaker Sean Hannity a week earlier– sure, he waived his $100,000 speaking fee, but the school still picked up the $50,000 travel bill for Hannity. WTF? Since when are schools paying for political rallies? College is expensive enough for students as it is, they don’t need to be funding these things.
Come on people. These entertainers, be they liberal or conservative, use politics to further polarize and divide America while making themselves money. Do they actually do anything to help solve the problems we face? It’s good if people become more aware of the issues and actually vote, sure. But these people aren’t going to paint a clear picture of the issues, so what good is the vote if it’s based on their influence?
I digress. I’m no good at talking about politics, so I guess I’ll stick to what I know. I just had to rant about that pathetic waste of money. Blogs were made to rant on, right?
EDIT:
From what I hear UVSC was able to recover their costs through ticket sales for the event (Moore’s speech, that is. I have no idea about Hannity). If that the case then it pretty much makes my rant about how school money is spent useless / pointless. However, I’m still not convinced either makes a good contribution to the country in which we live.
I think it’s funny, though, that Moore spoke in Happy Valley, heh.

I think it’s cool they got Moore to come speak. At least they got someone interesting! They may have been able to get a few other people to come entertain for that price, but I bet nobody would have cared about them. I’m sure I wouldn’t have heard about any other speakers, seeing as how I’ve never heard about anyone else speaking there before. Plus, it gave the kids an excuse to protest, and if they didn’t protest you’d have to find something else to rant about… like best buy.
Yeah– basically Moore’s the only guy that could draw a crowd like that and be a politcally motivated speaker. All the accounts I’ve heard say that it was pretty lacking in substance– but are we really surprised? Man I wish I could get paid $40,000 to get up and be an ass, heh.
careful what you say about UVSC students. . . i happen to be one! I actually applaud the student body officers getting Moore to speak. I have no idea what my student funds were going towards in years past, at least they spent it on something worth attending this year. and I have to say, Moore was a lot more substantial than Hannity’s blurbing. “Kerry’s a flip-flopper!” Boo hoo. Get over it.
Your mom is a flip flopper!
so, heebs, are you suggesting that kerry being a flip-flopper has become a non-issue just because some idiot says it a bunch of times?
hannity is a bafoon (sp?) in my opinion. moore is also an idiot. therefore, the school was rather skillful in obtaining two equally moronic, non-dialoguing ideologues (not to mention equally fluffy) to inspire our as-yet undecided (and surprisingly mystified by our political process) college student not to vote! if my vote were based on airheads fervently attacking each other, i, too would remove myself from the process. however, and thank heaven, we have more authentic and primary sources of information on our esteemed candidates. sure, listening to hot air is entertaining, but let’s not make our vote based on either of these blowhards.
forget the word ‘flip-flopper.’ think about the word kerry used 3 times in the final debate: ‘integrity’ …or lack thereof. think about the real word behind the buzz word.
no, i’m saying being a flip-flopper was a non-issue to begin with. have i gone back and forth about how i feel about the war? of course i have.
and i hope you’re not suggesting that bush has integrity? is never admitting you’re wrong a sign of integrity? he’s led us into a “pre-emptive strike” war with no exit strategy, lied about links between Iraq and 9-11, and has never admitted it was a serious lapse in judgment to send us in there. if that’s integrity than i don’t want anything to do with it.
i do agree with you, though, about both Moore and Hannity being retards.
I honestly can’t see far enough ahead to say whether it was indeed a serious lapse in judgement to go to war. It certainly is a dangerous precedent that he’s set. And as long as Bush believes what he’s doing is right then why should he say he was wrong? (heh, besides that, saying something like “I was wrong” might not strengthen his position politically in a race to be re-elected. It’s a no brainer why people do things like that.)
Ever think that there could be more going on than the government lets on or that the democrats want us to think is going on?
flip flopping about the war isn’t what bothers me about Kerry. I’m sure lots of people have shifted positions about the war. It’s the feeling I get when I listen to him talk… I can’t see how he has more integrity.
I certainly hear where you’re coming from. i still don’t like Kerry all that much. politics is a funny thing, tho, ain’t it?
i’m so high strung about politics. sometimes i get so caught up in justifying my position, i fail to refocus on just why i have that position to start with. people like hannity and moore do little to help us remember why we align with the republicans or the democrats. they merely force partisanism down our throats in an attempt to manipulate us out of thinking for ourselves. i listen to hannity on the radio sometimes (and moore if he’s on NPR, but his show doesn’t air around here), and while i tend to share his position on policy, his personality is just abrasive enough to bother me. his fans also turn me off. they fall all over themselves to worship him.
i’ve been listening to rush for years. and sean hannity is no rush limbaugh. hannity is passionate. and we all know that passion fuels the dark side. rush always intellectualizes the argument. intellectual analysis of a political situation usually neutralizes the unfactual argument. you may hate rush, but it’s hard to disagree with him when he makes a point, then lists legitimate reasons why his point is correct. the thing, i think, that people hate about rush is his arrogance. but, i find his arrogance tongue-in-cheek. he’s just pushing the buttons of his political opponents when he says things like, “attention members of the media: you can continue your story preparation right after this commercial break.” cracks me up, cause you know there are liberal reporters listening for him to screw up. he’s an entertainer, i guess. bottom line.
