Ok so it is the moon. Only my second attempt at shooting the moon
ever– didn’t have much of a telephoto to use (100mm macro lens) and
it’s kinda hard to focus on such a small object, but kinda cool 🙂 I’ll have to rent a telephoto and an extender some time to play with.

Wow, that is an awesome shot.
great star wars reference. and great shot. i remember a couple of years ago trying to shoot the moon (that could be construed as a rook reference). my camera insisted i needed a slow shutter speed and i naively agreed. finally after months of trying i realized that the moon itself is giving enough light to use a substantially faster shutter speed. it’s just that everything else is dark.
Yeah, a friend of mine who is a photographer taught me that You take pictures of the moon the same as you would in broad daylight– it’s basically reflecting sunlight. He called the rule “Sunny 16”– at f/16 you set your shutter speed to whatever your ISO speed is. That was shot at f/16, 1/200th of a second, and ISO 400. I slowed down the shutter speed to get a brighter image. I’d love to take a shot with a lens with more range…
what camera are you using that has f/16? i thought only dslrs went that small.
It’s a Canon 40d (yes, dSLR). I think it stops down to like f/22 or f/32 (which I guess is more dependent on the lens than the camera body).
