Cereal

So, a question came to mind today as I contemplated my upcoming cereal dinner.

How much cereal would one have to eat to be full or at least satiated? Here’s the cereal I had at my disposal: Honey Combs, Pops, and Cocoa Krispies. Just so you know we’re not talking about gravel (grape nuts) or granola, which might be more filling.

Seriously… you get tired of the flavor before you ever reach fullness with these cereals. How can they call ‘cereal’ a meal? You eat a bowl or two and you’re done… and five minutes later you’re starving because cereal didn’t fill you and plus, all that sugar goes right to your blood and just makes you hungrier.

I mean really… most sugar cereals shouldn’t even be considered food, but snacks or something.

  1. well, don’t they say “part of a complete breakfast” on their commercials? no one’s claiming it’s a complete meal. though you do bring up a good point about grape nuts. i accidentally filled up my bowl like i would with any other cereal. big mistake. big, heavy, filling mistake! i thought i would never finish it. i was fairly full. although i did get pretty sick of it before i got full. why the crap is it called grape nuts, anyway?

  2. I remember thinking that cereal would taste good when I was little. Sick.

And you’re right… what does it have to do with grapes? I mean I guess I can see how grapes kinda resemble a certain kind of nuts, what does that have to do with that nutritious gravel type cereal?

As far as “part of a complete breakfast” goes… they always show pictures of orange juice. Who drinks orange juice with cocoa krispys? And why would I have a separate glass of milk with it if you already put milk in your cereal? Is a piece of TOAST supposed to complete the meal? or a piece of fruit? Hehe… it’s such a farce. Real breakfast is with eggs and hashbrowns and good stuff like that.

  3. agreed. spam and eggs – now there’s a breakfast! about the only cereal i eat is cheerios – with no sugar on top, thank you very much.

  4. Heebs… yeah, that’s one of the few ways I enjoy spam ๐Ÿ˜‰ I mean, cheerios w/out sugar sounds kinda healthy… but then you have spam. That stuff can’t be good for you, hehe.

So, how many bowls of cheerios to fill you up? Now I kinda want cheerios…

  5. blueberry muffin for me! although i do enjoy a bowl of cereal now and then, i mean, it’s kinda like candy right. Honey Combs big, ya ya ya! They’re not small, no no no.

  6. Time to change cereals! Frosted mini wheats, raisin bran, granola, Kashi Go Lean you know, a little more substance. Fell up and eat less volume. How about a bran muffin? Heh. Love ya. Soogie

  7. yeah, takes a couple bowls of cherrios to do the job. i forgot about frosted mini wheats – good call soogs!

  8. ya, i was thinking about frosted mini wheats just the other day. I think that’s the only cereal i never get sick of. It’s gotta be spoon size tho!!

  9. i agree with your mama. time to change cereals. my suggestion would be kashi go lean CRUNCH. you gotta get the CRUNCH. all the other kashi’s taste like puffed cardboard. but i’m in love with the crunch and i DO find it filling.

and btw, i love the mt. man look. sorry i never got to say hi on sunday (we had to take off after church–mckinlay was in desperate need of a nap and was therefore on the verge of a meltdown). it took me a second to recognize you when i saw you walk into the chapel. ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. Ah, I have a nice big stale box of GoLean Crunch that’s been sitting in the cupboard since the days when I was more conscientious of what I ate. I do agree that of the healthier cereals, that one is tasty, makes a great snack too. And yes… I was duped into another Kashi cereal once. I think I even blogged about it:

Ah yes, MIGHTY BITES. IE, deceptively delicious looking yet actually cardboard tasting bites. If only you’d warned me back in May, haha.

And hey– yeah if I’d known some people weren’t gonna be able to stop by I woulda said hi– sorry I missed ya! Hope you guys had a good time over the holidays and traveled safe!

  11. It usually takes about 3 or 4 bowls to make me feel full. It’s probably all that milk! Ha ha. But, seriously, I will sit and eat 3 or 4 bowls. I do it all the time! I LOVE cereal. I know it’s not exactly the best “meal” around, but I rarely eat it as a meal anyways. I like it as an “after school snack” or a late night snack. And, sometimes I eat it for breakfast, but, you’re right – it doesn’t get me very far, and then I’m hungry again. My favorite cereal critique comes from Calvin and Hobbes, where Calvin eats his Chocolate Covered Sugar Bombs, or whatever they’re called. Hilarious, and true. That is all.

p.s. how the heck are you these days? Post more!
