Do You Believe in Coincidence?

Goonies is 25 years old this year…

So check this out. It’s Friday afternoon and I’m at the office trying to stay awake. I fire up the movie Goonies to listen to while I’m working and I’m enjoying the music from the opening sequence. I give it some thought, and then go to Amazon and search music for “goonies”. A Goonies CD (import) pops up and I get a little excited… But then it turns out to be a CD of the pop music with just one orchestral track. Ah, nevermind.

So I keep listening to Goonies as I work, and I hear that sort of “One Eyed Willie” theme when they’re up in the attic reading about Chester Copperpot… And I’m like “really, no score was ever released for this?”

So I go back to google and search for “Goonies score”. I turn up a few pages with people talking about bootleg scores and some 20 minute suite from an adventure score compilation, but no official release. I find pages from the last 10 years where people have set up online petitions and started letter writing campaigns to the composer (who’s hands were evidently tied) and to the music labels, with only a little hope that it might some day be released.

So then I think, “well, it might be released some day as a limited edition… I’ve bought a couple previously unreleased scores like that before.” (Ghostbusters complete score, The Burbs, Tron— scores that were previously unreleased or limited release but movies and music that I love.)

Then I’m thinking “well I don’t really visit any sites regularly where I’d get wind of such news, but I don’t want to miss out…” So I start poking around to see if there’s a film score site with a presence on twitter, and on a whim I visit a site called “Filmscoremonthly.com”, which I never visit. It just isn’t one of the soundtrack sites I usually hit, because usually I’m just looking for reviews of new movie scores at filmtracks.net, and don’t frequen their forums.

Well for fun, I type in “Goonies” in their search bar at Filmscoremonthly.com.

In turns up a hit for TODAY, March 5, 2010, among the results.

It turns out that Varese Sarabande CD Club announced LAST NIGHT that the complete score of Goonies is being released this month! Shipping the week of March 15th! HOT DAMN! Hahaha. I love it when an awesome unreleased score gets the legit release treatment 20-25 years later.

Needless to say there’s a copy of the Goonies score with my name on it that I should be enjoying in a couple of weeks.

Honestly. What are the odds that the one day I decided to dig for it that it actually turned up? Ah, I am geeking out over here. This is a Goonies fan slash film score enthusiasts dream come true 😀
