I’ve been reflecting a bit today on serving others lately, (perhaps a bit more so today due to a conversation with Kate this morning). I do wish I had organized my time a bit better this month, there were opportunities missed due to that disorganization. But the truth is, there are opportunities to serve and love every day, whether it’s a family member, a friend, or someone else that’s in need who crosses your path. Opportunities are there if you just watch for them and then act on them. It is caring that matters, not performing an act of service or giving some material thing to quiet your conscience.
These reflections call to my mind a quote from President Hinckley’s Christmas Devotional talk two years ago:
‘Merry’ may be the wrong word. More appropriately, we might say, ‘It is Christmastime. What can I do to help you? Are your burdens too heavy to carry? Is your sorrow too painful?’ This world is full of sorrowful people. Many of them feel totally beaten down. They are sick. They are impoverished. Life seems hopeless. Even at this season they seem oppressed by these feelings.
And that is what He whose birth we celebrate this weekend would wish for us– to love and care for each other. To lift up the hands that hang down, to reach out to those who are burdened or are sorrowful. So that’s what I’ll resolve to do… and the more of us do it, the more natural it will become and the more good we can do ๐
Merry Christmas everyone!
