So Dan’s iPod Classic recently ate it. Just stopped charging. As I have an identical iPod, I decided to order a replacement battery for his (and for my older 5.5 generation iPod), and see if the battery is the problem (because if it is, it’s relatively inexpensive to fix. If it’s the logic board, it’s over $100 and not worth it to fix.)
So that’s what I’m up to tonight… playing Frankenstein again, this time with iPods. So far what I’ve done is taken the 160gb hard drive out of my Classic and swapped it into my 5.5g iPod Video. Why? Because I like the sound signature of the 5.5g iPod better than the sound signature of the iPod Classic. Also, worst case scenario, if the battery *isn’t* the problem with Dan’s iPod, then I can donate parts from my Classic to him, and we still both have 160gb iPods to listen to.
We’ll see how it goes… 5.5g video, w/ new battery and 160gb hard drive, is currently trying to charge, and I don’t know how long before I’ll be able to tell if that operation was successful.
I’ll tell you one thing: the 5.5g is a breeze to open, and the classic is a beyayotch. ’nuff said. (Thanks a lot, Apple, for trying to make sure people don’t replace their own batteries.) Oh… and related to the Classic being a b to open… yeah. Neither of them will look nearly as pretty when I get done with them. I don’t care, but Dan might, haha. Oh well. Working iPod is better than dead iPod, right? 😛
Update: Epic fail. For a bit I thought I’d even sacrificed my own iPod Classic for no benefit. For some reason the 160gb drive is incompatible with the 5.5g iPod. So it’s back to square one… so I put the 80gb drive back in the 5.5g iPod, it’s working fine, just a little wear around the edges from removing the face plate.
My 160gb classic I didn’t think was gonna make it. I tried to put it back together and I got this red x on my screen, couldn’t do anything to get it restored. I was going to ditch it but then realized I might have files on there I want to keep (besides music, which obviously is all backed up). So I opened it back up and sure enough, the hard drive cable wasn’t properly connected. Reconnected it, reattached the battery, closed it, and it works fine… it just looks way uglier than it used to because I bent up the back plate so bad opening it, haha.
“No Albi, ya didn’t kill me with your dragon flames, I crawled to safety… but I was left very badly disfigured!”
At the end of the day… uglier iPods, but I know a bit more about taking them apart and changing out parts (like hard drives and batteries).
