I remember after watching the first few episodes of season 2 of Lost, there was some speculation about what that would do to your body if you had to press a button ever 108 minutes and so couldn’t sleep longer than a few hours at a time. Seems like some people found that you could train your body to run off a lot less sleep if you just did it in certain intervals during the 24 hour period (I no longer remember the specifics).
Suffice it to say I’ve had a few rough nights of sleep in recent history. Monday night I (purposely) stayed up all night– working on a project. In true procrastinator fashion I polished it off the last minute (ie giving me time to shower, get ready, and go to class). So yesterday I was running off of zero sleep, and really had no time to nap. Went to school, then work, then home for a couple minutes, then the Anberlin/Bayside/Meg & Dia/Jonezetta concert (which ended at 11pm), then Beto’s for a really late dinner… Got to bed around 12:30, about 40 hours since I had last woken up from sleep.
Probably the best sleep I can remember having in a long time. It gets me thinking about sleep. See, as long as I concentrated and was busy, I was fine. We were at the concert and Steve was like “are you gettin’ tired” and it wasn’t till he suggested “tired” to my brain that I even yawned. But no I wasn’t that tired at the concert.
Imagine how productive life would be if a) you only slept every other day and b) the sleep you got was like gold and you felt like a million bucks when you woke up. The key is to stay busy. Even just sitting as a passenger in a car I started to lose consciousness, heh. I’m thinking about pulling some more all-nighters at work, hmm…..
Don’t get me wrong… I’ve always been a fan of sleep and lounging around. But man… last night’s sleep was soooo much better than most. I’m just considering other possibilities 😉 (Sleep when you’re dead, right Mel?)

Welll… that’s not exactly what I meant, but hey – whatever works! I think you should do a little more research on sleep before you consider changing your lifestyle though, hehe. Your body DOES need a certain amount of sleep to function, and going 24-48 hours without sleep (then getting a few “golden” hours of sleep, as you put it) will likely do your body more harm than good.
But it’s true- sleep when you’re dead. Do as much as you can NOW! (That’s what I tell myself in the mornings when I consider NOT getting out of bed to exercise!)
Sleep… What is that? I don’t remeber what sleep is. I don’t think I have really known what that concept is since I got pregnant with Kekoa… 7 YEARS AGO!!! Oh wait! I wound up in the hospital for a while and had some good pain drugs. I hope I find out what sleep is the near future.
Carm!
This blog is ironic because it’s 2:47 AM and I’m up because I’ve been trying to fall asleep for hours, with no luck. So I decided to try and get up for a while. And I thought…hmmmm…I wonder what Mikie has been up to?! So, after reading what you had to say about sleep, I’ve decided that I should try to embrace this sleepless night and fill it with something very meaningful. And I’ve just decided to watch a little Pride and Prejudice!
Em– haha! EXCELLENT. I swear it really is a mind game. I mean naturally you should do the ‘early to bed early to rise’ thing, but sometimes you either can’t sleep (I feel worse on days where I get like 3-4 hours of restless sleep than I do when I spend all night doing something productive and get no sleep at all) or something is more urgent than sleep.
Cass– Yeah I hear that. In my class there were 2 other guys who hadn’t slept. One was my buddy and he’d been up all night fussing with his project. The other was like “yeah I was up all night but not working on this project.” When we asked why he was up he mentioned a newborn… yeah. Couldn’t hurt to prepare ahead of time for sleepless nights, eh? :p
Mel–
Read Cassi’s comments. Hehe. What’s funny about that “sleep when you’re dead” idea that Barry shared a couple times in the forum is that I don’t plan on ever being dead :p But you’re right. I should at least make sure I’m doing what’s necessary to be healthy. I remember an X-Files episode about these guys who’d had some sort of surgery or something to make them sleepless for the millitary… I’ll have to go back and watch it and see how I feel then. Or watch the Ring again, because Samara never sleeps either and as a result just spends her time filling people’s heads with freaky images until she kills them. Hmm…..
