Though there’s been talk of costumes and the stores are filled with Halloween decorations and candy (not to mention Christmas stuff that’s already available), I hadn’t really caught the Halloween bug yet this month.
At lunch today I chatted with my sisters about Halloween and Halloween movies and decided I needed to A) compile a list of movies to watch for Halloween, and B) Get started watching them! So folks, if you have recommendations let me know and I’ll add them to the list. As long as there’s a connection to halloween or something supernatural or scary, it should work just fine…
Edit: updated the list– some of these are pretty cheesy but still nostalgic for Halloween.
Movies to Watch for Halloween
The Ring
The Others
Ghostbusters
Ghostbusters 2
The Changeling
Scary Movie 3 (comes out this Friday, the 24th– I’m there!)
The Sixth Sense
Mothman Prophecies
Watcher in the Woods
Mr. Boogedy
Casper
Hocus Pocus
The Burbs
The Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror
Scary Tales
open to more suggestions… if only I could somehow find a copy of Mr. Boogedy…. [edit] Actually you can get bootlegs on eBay, woo!
On a side note, I found recently that I get a lot of visits from people searching for the words “Samara” and “The Ring” on my site. I wonder if someone has me linked to their site from the stuff I had posted last year? Hmmm…. guess I better get to posting some freaky stuff!

I personally love the psych thrillers like mothman prophecies and 6th sense. the only problem is, once you’ve seen them, they loose the scare effect. i guess that’s true with anything. love ghostbusters! now, if i could only get megan to watch the ring with me!
Haha, the Ring is great though it is best when it’s in the theater.
Good call with Sixth Sense and Mothman Prophecy…
Wait…you’re going to see Scary Movie 3? Is that because it might do a spoof of The Ring? Or The Others?
As well as Matrix ๐ It’s pg-13 so no worries.
What about the classic disney scary movie, watcher in the woods? That is after all what I was reminded of when nevik told me his name cause the chicks name was karen and the dogs name was nerak in the movie…. ohhhhhhh freaky!!!
yeah, that is a darn scary movie
Watcher in the Woods eh? I don’t know that I ever saw it all the way through. I just remember Steve and Heeble watched the dvd a couple years back and they said it was hilarious (but terrible as a scary movie). Also, Mar mentioned yesterday that the dvd has some alternate endings which are pretty laughable. I may have to watch it just for kicks, heh.
I never said it was scary… just that it was a classic disney scary movie!
I have to agree. Definitely a classic Disney film. Maybe not too scary, but it’s one of those films that uses freaky music and camera angles to create the suspense. I love that. (I can freak myself out worse I have to just FEEL what’s going on, not necessarily see it.) But yes, if any of you haven’t seen the DVD version, and you want to pee your pants laughing at some alternate endings, I recommend checking it out!
I would definately have to say Casper and Hucus Pocus are the best movies to get you in the mood for Halloween!!! hehe! Ghetto as they may be, they always get me excited for Halloween!!! I guess I should take my own advice and watch them…
well i thought watcher in the woods was scary when i saw it at age 9 or 10. i should watch it again to see how cheesy or whatever it is.
How embarrassing… Watcher in the Woods STILL scares ME, and I refuse to see The Ring. I’ll stick with Ghostbusters, thanks!
Hehe. I think I shall add the Burbs to the list as well. That movie was creepy when I was little and hilarious now. Too bad Watcher in the Woods wasn’t supposed to be a comedy or it might be a gem ๐
Oh yeah, the Burbs! Hysterical. What about ‘Practical Magic’ and ‘What Lies Beneath’?
I thought the ring sucked, in all honesty, but than again I saw it at 4 in the afternoon, and my date and I were the only ones in the theatre, so we picked it apart, noticed things that you usually don’t, the suspense atmosphere wasn’t there. I need to give it another try I am told, so we see… But Hocus Pocus is way old school, love that movie. You know what would always freak us out, not really movies, but playing Resident Evil at like midnight, when the house is asleep and things jump out at you, stuff like that. Good luck getting in the mood. All else fails, hit a haunted house.
Yeah I know other people that think the same about the Ring. I doubt you’ll find it any scarier if you’ve already ripped it apart, don’t bother.
Hehehe…watched Hocus Pocus the other night. Love that show! Always made me want to be in Salem, MA around Halloween-time, although I’ve heard it’s actually quite a let-down of a town if you want to see anything witch related.
Wow Sloan… I am curious to see who this person is. Let me know how the IP search turns out for our friend!
A good scary movie? I don’t know. I always feel like the really old scary movies (that unfortunately aren’t too scary) get me in the mood for halloween – like invasion of the body snatchers or the blob, or even that one with all the kids in it that can control peoples minds, or something like that… anyone know what I’m talking about? One of the simpsons episodes had something like it called “The Bloodening” or something. yeah.
I thought the bloodening was a reference to children of the corn… is that the movie you are talking about? I think the bloodening had the children’s eye glowing blue though which just made me keep thinking of Dune.
Grrr, I’ve been comment spammed. Spam deleted. May have to research a commenting blacklist.
Comment spammed huh, can’t you tell who it was? Or is that not possible?
You realize that now that you have erased the viagra post it makes me look like I am talking about absolutely nothing? Which is the case generally but on a more extreme level this time.
At least there was a post to erase that only makes it look like you’re talking about nothing, rather than just talking about nothing every time you post ๐
Our school kids are going to watch The nightmare before Christmas.” This is Halloween”
Oh good…you erased a post about Viagra, huh? That’s helpful to know. That makes me feel better since that means that Joel wasn’t just thinking about it. ๐ I’m confused for good reason.
